Public address systems used to mean dedicated speaker cabling run separately from every other system in a building — a parallel infrastructure that had to be pulled, terminated, and maintained on its own. IP-networked PA changes that equation by putting audio, control, and power on the same category cabling already running through the building for data.

What actually changes when PA goes IP

An IP PA endpoint — a speaker, horn, or zone adapter — connects with a single CAT5 or CAT6 cable that carries the audio signal, control data, and Power-over-Ethernet all at once. There’s no separate 100V speaker line to pull, and no local power supply needed at the speaker itself. Serenix’s SR-IPPAA-BS15 wall speaker and SR-IPPAA-CS6 ceiling speaker both work this way — PoE 802.3af/at powers the unit’s built-in Class-D amplifier directly, so installation is genuinely one cable per endpoint.

For new construction or major renovations where structured cabling is already being run throughout the building, this removes an entire category of installation labour. Scale Without New Wiring

Zones, priority, and control

The practical benefit of an IP architecture isn’t just installation simplicity — it’s what the network enables operationally. Every endpoint can be individually addressed, grouped into zones, and reconfigured in software rather than by re-patching cables. Paging can be prioritised over background music automatically, multiple zones can run different content simultaneously, and a SR-IPPAA-700TPS touch-screen remote microphone gives an operator direct access to zone, group, and all-zone paging from anywhere on the network — not just from a single fixed control room.

For facilities that need to distinguish between routine paging and emergency voice alarm — schools, transport hubs, large campuses — this priority handling is what makes a single system capable of serving both roles without one function interfering with the other.

Where it fits, and where it doesn’t

IP PA is the right architecture for large, multi-zone facilities — campuses, shopping centres, transport hubs, hotel chains — where the number of zones and the value of centralised, software-based management outweigh the cost of PoE-capable network switching. For a single small building with a handful of zones, a conventional digital PA system like the SR-6500 can be simpler to deploy and specify, since it doesn’t require the network infrastructure an IP system depends on.

The decision usually comes down to scale and what’s already in the building: if there’s existing PoE-capable network infrastructure and the facility spans multiple zones or buildings, IP PA is very likely the more flexible, more maintainable choice.
